As an artist I love to push my materials to their potential. Discovering myself as an artist through mark making. Building up and refining areas, making each section as interesting and significant as the next.
The major catalyst for my work is particular social issues that are consuming the media. My work reflects on how particular issues are consumed by society, remain in our awareness and then over a period of time are lost within the subject matter. I mirror the way the media focuses on these topics and quickly moves onto a new theme.
The media covers issues from domestic violence, body dismorphic disorder, to size 0; these issues become my focus for a short period of time.
I present the information using a narrative formula, a realisation of the situation in order for the viewer to conjure an opinion. My work is produced using this notion of process, I find it fascinating to see where my project has started and how it progresses and evolves into more exciting compositions and ideas.
Transgender is the subject matter, which I am currently addressing. I am observing the identity of one transgender. His confidence, his optimism and the comfortable approach to his identity inspire me. Great deals of society are uncomfortable with their identities as they are under this media pressure to become a size 0, be “perfection”. I want to put the transgender on a Pedi stool, a role model for society.
